Chapter 292 - 289: No Wonder He Was So Cold to Her
Clara Grant stared at her for a long time before slowly looking away.
Sarah Shelby’s heart sank. ’This time, Clara is really angry with me.’
Just as she was about to sink into despair, Clara looked back at her.
Her lips parted as she slowly asked, "Are you... scared of me, acting like this?"
Sarah Shelby froze for a moment, then nodded eagerly. "Yes, I’m scared. I’m very scared. I’m afraid you’ll never speak to me again, afraid we won’t be best friends anymore!"
’So Clara has already forgiven me! Her pretending to be angry, and that question she asked... it’s the little routine we always do when we’ve had a fight and are looking for a way to make up!’
’I was so nervous, I completely forgot!’
"Well, since you’re scared, I guess I’ll forgive you," Clara said, tilting her head to look at her friend.
Sarah Shelby immediately threw herself at Clara, hugging her tightly. Her eyes were red as she said, "Clara, you have no idea how terrified I was just now. I really thought you were angry with me and that you wouldn’t be my friend anymore."
Clara patted her back comfortingly. "You silly goose, how could I stop being your friend? You’re my absolute best friend. We’re practically one person at this point—you’re a part of me, and I’m a part of you. Abandoning you would be like cutting off a piece of myself."
’In truth, I had already forgiven her the moment she started explaining. Even though Sarah is technically the Second Miss of the Shelby Family, her position there is very awkward.’
’In the Shelby Family, the only people she really cares about are her father, Evan Shelby, and her mother, Cherie Rhodes, who only moved into the family home a few years ago.’
’If I were in her shoes, I would have done the same thing for the sake of my family.’
’Being best friends isn’t just about helping each other through hard times, giving advice when things are confusing, sharing each other’s burdens, and celebrating happy moments together.’
’It’s also about being able to put yourself in the other’s shoes when they’re forced to do something—as long as it doesn’t cross a line, of course—and understanding their powerlessness and lack of choice.’
She and Sarah had exactly that kind of friendship. Like any best friends, they had occasional friction and small tiffs. But it wouldn’t be long before one of them made a gesture of peace, giving the other a graceful way out. The other would naturally take it, and just like that, they were best friends again.
Their bond only grew stronger with every argument and reconciliation.
They hugged for a while before pulling apart. After composing herself, Sarah returned to their earlier topic, asking Clara, "You’ve seen Autumn Shelby?"
"Mhm." Clara recounted what had happened in the private room at The Tuberose. After a moment’s thought, she asked, "Sarah, do you know why Seth Quinn broke off his engagement with Autumn Shelby?"
"The story is that Autumn Shelby suddenly got cold feet right before the wedding, so she ran off abroad to clear her head without saying a word. Seth Quinn gave her three months. After waiting for three months, Autumn still hadn’t come back—she didn’t even make a single phone call. So, Seth Quinn announced that the engagement was off."
’I never really cared much about Autumn Shelby, so I don’t know many of the details. But that’s the story both my father, Evan Shelby, and my mother, Cherie Rhodes, told, so it must be true.’
Clara didn’t say anything, but inside, her heart was in turmoil again.
’So that’s what happened. Autumn Shelby got cold feet and just abandoned Seth Quinn. No wonder he acted so cold and spiteful toward her when he saw her again after a year, even though he’s still deeply in love with her and can’t let her go.’
